Tackers 1: Having Fun!

Get your kids on the water these school holidays with our Tackers 1 course, designed for children aged 7 to 13 who are water confident. This is a fantastic way for young sailors to have fun while learning the basics of sailing in a safe and supportive environment.

What to Bring:

  • Morning tea and water bottle
  • Suitable clothing for the weather (spray jacket recommended, wetsuit if cold)
  • Reef shoes or equivalent for wearing in the water

Additional Info:

  • Participants must be water confident (ability to swim 50m fully dressed with a life jacket)
  • Change rooms and hot showers available
  • Each participant receives an Australian Sailing Tackers Pack, including a hat and rashie

This is Free for you and provides Australian Sailing personal Insurance at no cost.



Discover Sailing with Tackers

Tackers 1 - Having Fun course requires no prior knowledge or boating experience, all we ask is that your child is water confident.  All equipment is included for sailing, including a Personal Flotation Device (lifejacket) for each sailor.  There are 2 more levels of the Tackers program, Tackers 2 – Tricks and Techniques and Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast.

Tackers 1 - Having Fun course will teach the basics of sailing, including all techniques required to set-up the boat, leave and return to the beach, sail around a course or to a destination and safety on the water. The courses also cover the basic rules of sailing, weather and knot tying. All content is delivered in the most practical way possible – on the water!  With high instructor to student ratios, students will sail on their own or in pairs in a ‘Optimist’ training dinghy, with an instructor close by in a powerboat.

The course cost includes 20 hours of tuition, full personal insurance cover issued by Australian Sailing, a National Tackers Certificate, mid-morning break snack and a sausage sizzle lunch on the final day, cost $360.


Course Overview
This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing. 

Course Prerequisites

  • 7-12 years-old

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.

Course Outcome

By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:

  • Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
  • Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
  • Tack (push turn)
  • Gybe (pull turn)
  • Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
  • Sail with tiller extension
  • Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat

You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate.
